WILD Campo Alegre

Research

One of the major goals of the foundation is to foster a breeding ground for research in the reserve. We have a very close working relationship with UNISARC, the local university in Santa Rosa de Cabal (a town close to Pereira). But we would love to invite Danish and other foreign universities to send their students and researchers to the reserve.

Since the reserve today covers an altitudinal range from 2800-4900 meters, and both pastures in recuperation, secondary and primary cloud forest, we are able to provide excellent conditions for research in the unique flora, fauna and ecological processes.

With support from UNISARC University and other institutions, we host researchers studying ecology, biodiversity, and climate resilience. We are currently constructing facilities to host researchers, biologists, students. Since July 2023 we have had camara traps documenting the wildlife in the forests of WCA.

And since March 2025 we have installed more cameras on what used to be barren pastures near the main house and were delighted to see mountain tapir with a young tapir and also puma and more mammals. Confirming that our efforts are working.

The camera trap-data have already resulted in two scientific publications.

A) First ever documented feral dogs attacking mountain tapir.
