Last week I signed an agreement (comodato) with the local environmental authorities (CARDER) to take over all administration/responsibilities for the 475-hectare Romeral area. This means that our WILD Campo Alegre Nature Reserve (WCA) now encompasses +1200 hectares from around 2900-4500 m. It makes a lot of sense, because from the headquarters of WCA, it is much easier for us to monitor the area, remove barbed wire that was left in the past and secure that e.g. cattle does not enter the area. It is a unique nature, including both cloud forest and páramo vegetation and we will also be able to invite researchers and students from local and other universities to investigate the amazing biodiversity. From camera traps and sightings, we know that there are spectacled bear, mountain tapir, puma and much more. A big day for WILD Campo Alegre and for nature.
