WILD Campo Alegre
Camera traps & monitoring
In order to monitor the area and also provide data for researchers, we have set up a grid of around 25 camera traps, that are “emptied” every 6-7 weeks. The results are amazing and documenting that we have a healthy population of a large variety of mammals including mountain tapir, puma, clouded tiger cat, red brocket deer, coatis, even spectacled bear and much more.
Another very important part of our monitoring program is frequently to make expeditions to the more remote parts of our reserve in order to secure that e.g. cattle has not invaded the reserve. This still occasionally happens, and we are in constant dialogue with our neighbours to prevent this.
In particular it is important in the higher parts of our reserve, in the páramo, where access is difficult and conditions are tough.
All in all, these problems are much more contained now in 2025 that in 2023. Partly because we have grown considerably and actually included the areas, where cattle used to be but have now been removed. And partly because of better communication with our neighbours.
